Things are getting busy and exciting in the southern area of Davao City. More than the malls and the usual hustle and bustle of the city, exciting events are happening every weekend in the south.
Flea Markets and Pop Ups
In search of new things to try and spaces to explore beyond the air-conditioned mall Davaoenos have turned "flea markets" into a weekend destination.
In the past three years, we have seen the rise in popularity of what is now generally called “flea markets.” Technically, these are pop-up markets and bazaars in various locations around the city. During the weekend leading up to Araw ng Dabaw, at least 13 flea markets were held all over the city. And on any ordinary weekend, at least one is happening in the city.
More than being marketplaces, these pop-up markets become all-in-one events. Local MSMEs are able to introduce themselves to the public and market their products and services. And in some instances, experiment with new products and flavors. Students, young professionals, and families visit these markets to shop, dine, and try new experiences. Some markets conduct workshops and host community events. Hobby groups such as book clubs, journaling circles, and crochet clubs also meet and conduct activities at these pop-up markets.
Two of the most popular and in-demand venues are Three Yards and Tio Noning’s, both located in the Juan Subdivision and Tulip Drive neighborhood. Away from the usual downtown event venues and closer to the southern residential areas.
And further down south, more venues are starting to host pop-up markets and other community events.
Good Matcha and Good Food
Recently, popular matcha destination Inda House in Dumoy hosted a pop-up. While the location is considered quite out of the way, it is popular among matcha lovers. And with their recent pop-up market, Inda House has also become a destination for Davaoñeos looking for a weekend activity
Another popular destination for foodies is Cafe Basilico. They are popular for their pasta dishes and pizza. Considered by many to be a worthy stop when you are in the south.
Lesser known but just as notable are Stella’s Cuisine, Knto Cinco, and Kaniii Slow Bar.
Stellar’s Cuisine serves popular Filipino kakanin and snacks. Craving kutsinta, palitaw, and sapin-sapin? They offer these and more. Their kakanin are made from scratch, with love. Each one was carefully prepared and cooked the traditional way. And do not miss out on their binignit. Knto Cinco started as a small home cafe in Puan. And while they now have a branch in downtown Davao, the og knto Cinco in Puan continues to serve their signature coffee drinks, matcha blends, and savory dishes.
Another must-try home cafe in the area is Kaniii Slow Bar. Their bottle cold brew is potent, a treat for coffeeholics. They also offer a variety of hot and cold coffee concoctions, as well as savory sandwiches and rice dishes.
Mountain Getaway
And we cannot talk about the south without mentioning Eden Nature Park. When Eden opened their doors to the public, it was one of the first nature parks in Davao. And through the years, they have maintained their reputation as one of the best resorts in Davao, for locals and tourists alike. The vast park has animals, hiking trails, a fishing pond, flowers and gardens, and many other activities. Whether you are looking for a quiet time alone or a fun time with family and friends, Eden Nature Park is a good choice.
And for those who prefer smaller vacation resorts, Saddleback Haven, Loleng’s Mountain Resort, and Sunridge Resort are located in the same area. Smaller bed and breakfast places and resorts are also available for a weekend getaway in the south.
Modern Amenities and Facilities
While close to nature, the South has also seen the establishment of essential institutions such as schools and hospitals. And with the near completion of the Coastal Road, the south is not as far as it used to be. And even more convenient is the implementation of the citywide bus system, which will bring the south closer to downtown.
In just a few years, the South will no longer just be a good weekend destination for recreation. But rather, a prime choice for residence.
Live in the South
Close to nature but not far from convenience. Sounds like a great way to live. Soon, Ayala Virendo will rise in Toril. It is the first residential neighborhood of Ayala Land Premier.
Virendo comes from two Spanish words: “Verde”, which means green, and “Pausado,” which means gentle or deliberate. Touted as an elevated green haven, the neighborhood has a rolling terrain with waterways woven through it and a majestic view of the Mt. Apo Talomo mountain range and the Davao Gulf.
Phase 1 of the development will include 37.40 hectares with 150 lots. Lot sizes range from 450 to 1,803 sqm. Virendo will have two (2) amenity centers for residents. The Resident’s Lounge, located near the main entrance of the neighborhood, will include indoor and outdoor lounges and a lawn space for recreation. The Sports & Leisure Center, situated at the highest point of the neighborhood, will have a social hall, pool complex, great lawn, and multi-purpose court.
The neighborhood is located near Eden Nature Park, Saddleback Haven, St. Peter’s College, and Davao Central College.
Do not miss out on living in the bustling south of Davao City.
