Big Bad Wolf Books: A Mission to Increase English Reading and Literacy by Providing Access to Inexpensive Books All Over the World.

Starting as a small 500-square-foot bookstore in Malaysia in 2006, Big Bad Wolf Books has grown to a major player in the global bookselling market. It is guided by the simple but effective goal of promoting literacy by lowering the cost and increasing the accessibility of books.

The brain of Malaysian entrepreneurs Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng, Big Bad Wolf Books began with the ambition of changing reading habits in Malaysia. The company has since evolved into the world’s largest book sale, serving millions of readers across multiple countries and creating a unique model for affordable literacy.

In 2009, Big Bad Wolf Books held its first large-scale event, aiming to bring books directly to people through the “Big Bad Wolf Book Sale.” Recognizing that many potential readers don’t frequently visit traditional bookstores, the founder set out to create an engaging, affordable book-buying experience that attracts families and friends. During these book sale events, non-readers have been introduced to books for the first time and eventually embraced the habit of reading. Over time, these sales grew, ultimately featuring millions of books, earning that company its reputation as the “World’s Biggest Book Sale” for affordable, quality books.

The impact has been profound: “In 2015, we started noticing that young adult books were selling out faster than ever before,” says Big Bad Wolf Books co-founder Jacqueline Ng. “This was a turning point for us, as we realized that the children who had attended our early sales were now teenagers choosing books.” The organic increase in young adult readership has reinforced Big Bad Wolf’s commitment to cultivating a lifelong love of reading.

The company expanded internationally in 2016, first taking its mission to Indonesia and Thailand and eventually to the Philippines in 2018. This global expansion presented logistical challenges, as transporting millions of books, navigating customers, and establishing warehouses in partner countries. “We had to find creative solutions to every logistics challenge we face,” said Ng, adding that partnerships with local logistics providers, such as their arrangement in the Philippines, have made it easier to deliver books to events while keeping prices low.

Big Bad Wolf Books remains committed to its goal despite the rise of e-books and digital reading platforms. “Physical books, especially for children, are invaluable,” says Ng. “There is a special joy in holding a book, choosing one from the shelf, and bringing it home. That’s a joy that digital media cannot replace.” The company has observed that parents who bring their children to the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale are delighted with the event’s book offering and affordability, allowing them to buy multiple books without breaking the bank.

Driven by a clear purpose and unwavering belief in the power of books to change lives, Big Bad Wolf Books continues to innovate and expand, promoting literacy and accessibility one book sale at a time.

The Big Bad Wolf Davao is dedicated to welcoming both avid readers and those who may not consider themselves regular readers.
